I suppose it had to happen
I've owned my house for over 9 years. I've lived with Caroline for 6. Before then I had another friend who stayed for a bit. In all that time I've never nearly destroyed it.
Until today.
I've got a habit of leaving my (gas) kettle on the hob with a tea towel next to it (so I can lift it). This morning I switched the gas on and wandered off to the fridge for the milk. When I looked back the tea towel was on fire.
Obviously, being a trained fire officer, I squealed, grabbed the towel of the range and stamped on it. At no time did I pour the contents of the kettle over it or dump it in the sink. My smoke alarm proved to be pretty ineffective too (based on the lack of response my kitchen would have to be an inferno before it shot off) My floor is covered in a sooty mess and the cat is still in shock.
I don't think I can be allowed to live alone.
I hope I turned the iron off.
