I'd forgotten it was the 12th and so drove around town for thirty minutes trying to get past the lodge (it's their god-given right to march through rush-hour, dammit!) and so my first day back after my holiday I'm late.

I've an article about brownies that has materialised on my chair as well as three emails from the same person. As they got my away message I can only assume they thought I was lying. I'm quite good about marking my email as away - I only do it if I'm not going to physically read it so why he thought it would make any difference I don't know.

They're getting closer!

I grew up in London, so I thought of Orange Marches as something they had in Northern Ireland. Last night at the RSFG, the hot weather and the looming prospect of a Glasgow Worldcon prompted me to tell about the time I was moderating a panel in the Glasgow Central Hotel at Intersection, the 1995 Worldcon. It was hot and humid, so I opened a window, and was astonished to see an Orange parade right below. I shouldn't have been surprised given the history of Glasgow, but I was.

And now you tell me they're in Liverpool? At this rate, I'll soon find out there was one round the corner where I grew up, and I never noticed.

What is the most southern annual Orange parade in the UK?

They used to go to the Lewes 5/11 bash, I believe....

Checking on wikipedia and then on http://www.gole.org.uk, I find:
The Metropolitan Province covers the following areas of England:
City Of London
Old Harlow
Hockley
Plymouth
Bristol
Portsmouth
Southsea
Farnham
Oxford
Southampton
Lewes
Which is way worse than I expected

Both Liverpool and Glasgow share the same sectarian divisions as Northern Ireland although much more diluted here. Until the 60's Everton and Liverpool identified with a particular faith, much like the Celtic/Rangers split in Scotland and I thought the Orange Lodge marched *everywhere* until I moved to Leeds in 1990.

Not to mention Edinburgh with Hearts/Hibs and (back a decade or two) Dundee with City/United (who call their strip tangerine rather than use the "O" word).
